Learn more about the Head to Speech Interprofessional Task Force Summit!
The Head to Speech Interprofessional Task Force Summit helps to foster Interprofessional education and collaborative practices between departments, programs, organizations, clinics, camps, and leagues related to Communication Sciences and Disorders, athletics, allied health and rehabilitative sciences, sports medicine, neuropsychology, sports management, sports culture, law, and media studies.
The Summit is our largest annual meeting and fundraiser for the national Head to Speech Community, which has grown since 2021 to include 14 Board of Directors, 90+ Interprofessional Task Force members, 60+ Ambassadors, and over 1,300 followers across social media platforms!
The interactive summit is for students, professionals, interprofessional teams, community collectives, organizations, and businesses who can benefit from devising an action plan for their community on athlete brain health, sports concussions, and their effects on cognitive-communication skills.
We empower our community to not only become Head to Speech Ambassadors but to also integrate brain health into their everyday lifestyles. Learn how to align your mission with our educational, scientific, charitable, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Academic Development of Student-Athletes
The 3rd Annual Head to Speech Summit theme explores the unique academic challenges faced by student-athletes in secondary and higher education. We provide interprofessional education and collaborative experiences that positions the Speech-Language Pathologist as a Learning Specialist who works with Student-Athlete Academic Advisors and other support systems.
Our summit is ideal for understanding the ins and outs of academic counseling and tutorial programs from various perspectives that offer supplemental support, with tutors available to assist with content comprehension, study skills, and time management. Speech-Language Pathologists may assist with cognitive-communication skills, reading and writing, as well as work with student-athletes to improve academic skills and identify potential barriers to learning, empowering them to succeed both on and off the field.
In return, Student-Athlete Academic Advisors also teach the Head to Speech Community about academic counseling to help student-athletes make informed decisions about their college selection, degree, major selection, plan their semester courses, and maintain their eligibility to play.
Return-to-Learning After Sports Concussion: Special Considerations for Secondary and Higher Education
Join the conversation about the approximately 3.8 million sports concussions that occur every year. After 4 weeks, any where between 10-20% of athletes who have sustained a concussion develop postconcussion syndrome. Athletes who have sustained 3 or more concussions also have a greater risk of experiencing difficulties with attention, concentration, orientation, reaction time, auditory processing, memory, word finding, disorganized thought processing, problem solving, sequencing, organization, planning, or social communication.
Discover real life scenarios of student-athletes beyond return-to-play protocols. Becoming an advocate for yourself is one of the best skills you can teach a student-athlete after sustaining a sports-related concussion. Student-athletes are better equipped once they take control of their own learning needs and understand the role of speech-language pathologists in sports concussion management. SLPs use tools, strategies and accommodations that they can help them navigate their journey throughout recovery and lifetime.
- Learn how to overhaul the student-athletes academic lifestyle after sports concussion at the macro and micro levels through individualized planning and organizational skills.
- Understand how to conserve energy by using self-rating symptom scales, planners, compensatory strategies, and accommodations.
- Learn the executive functioning milestones and how these skills typically development and how they are treated after sports concussion.
- Learn the importance of the return to learning resources inside the Head to Speech Brain Health and Concussion Recovery Care Packages.

Learning Happens On-and-Off the Field
The Learning Curve brought to you by Marcus Smith II of The Circle of M!
6 Year NFL Veteran, Speaker, Life Coach & Founder of The Circle of M, Global Ambassador for All Points North Lodge, and Head to Speech Board Member

Learning takes place on and off the field, and it's important that we are intentional about educating ourselves on the symptoms of the concussion, so we can be proactive instead of reactive."
- Let's discuss athlete experiences throughout their journey from High School to playing in the National Football League.
- You will be able to identify athlete experiences with being educated on concussions and their effects on cognitive communication skills.
- You will also be able to identify how this information can help athletes process their own learning curve as pertains to their own brain and mental health.

The Concussed SLP
Amanda Locke, 2022 Keynote Speaker
"Summits like this are one of many tiny steps in the direction of arming ourselves with knowledge and shareable information so that SLPs are eventually one of the first referrals after a concussion.
Your own attendance at this summit shows that you're at least curious, if not excited, at the idea of increasing your own knowledge of concussion rehab within our field.
I applaud you all for being here and for being a part of a newer, less straightforward part of our scope of practice."
